Search the world for an essay whose style you admire
This essay can be, but doesn’t have to be, old. Ideally, this will be a newer voice, one fit for the present generation
The essay should discuss the same issues we have discussed in class, which is to say, nearly any issue, including, but not limited to:
- Politics
- The Justice System
- Justice
- Feminism
- Gender
- Race
- Culture
- Class
- United States History
- Etc.
I recommend reading 2 or 3, or however many it takes in order to find a satisfying style
Once you’ve found your essay, annotate it, scanning for style, voice, syntax, word choice, structure, etc.
Bring this annotated essay to class next Monday (02/22/2021) along with having read the first 120 pages of Gatsby
- (We will be sharing techniques from these essays that we want to emulate in our own writing. It would be useful to have a mobile copy you can bring to our one-on-one conferences, but a book would be fine.)

*Remote students will have a digital copy to share with classmates via Google Meet (i.e. make it linkable).
